 Cuento del mar

Voy a beberme el mar.
Ya tengo listo mi velero fantasma.
no le he trazado rumbos a mi ausencia,
no he fatigado el mapa

Pasaremos a Escocia y a Noruega.
Después navegaremos a Vinlandia

Construction of the steel sailboat: " Wayra "  Which is being built in Barranquilla - Colombia.

The boat is one 46 foots Cruising sailing boat with Naval Steel hull.

The name Wayra mean:" As fast as the wind " in quechua ; the Incas language. The ancient South American civilization.

If you have a dream you have to make it a reality otherwise you will be only: A dreamer.

In 1978 I joined the Navy school (Admiral Padilla) as Merchant marine cadet in Cartagena - Colombia where I began to had contact with the sea. sailing in local competitions and weekend cruises around the Cartagena  bay  was one of the main gratification sports practiced by the cadets on board of small sport sail boats (Sailing dinghies and lasers ).Since those times I promise to myself that one day I will have my own sailing boat to be able not only to navigate into the Cartagena bay, but safely all over the world.

Therefore a sailboat has been for me a dream for more than 20 years, many times I though he never will become a reality and it will be impossible to reach such hard goal. Many things all gathered at the end of 2002 made it  possible to start  and stop to be only a dreamer. I hope from here I can help to all of them who wish to make also your dream a reality and I hope as well, meet people here who can help me to carry out my project until the end, and soon show to you my boat sailing over all those beautiful seas.

Same as all of the homebuilders the budget is the main problem that makes it a great challenge taking years to complete the project. You will see here some ways I did to overcome the starting difficulties due to my short budget; but without reduce material quality, safety and designer specifications.

The most important now, is that I had already started.

I have chosen the name Wayra in honor and tribute to the great South American Incas culture, and to all  Pre-Columbian cultures. When the Spaniards conquerors arrive to South America, the Incas dominion extended over the Andes cordillera, from North Chile to South colombia.

Their high organized form of government and  spirituality was simply wonderful.

Worshippers of nature and for them time and space were sacred ,as well the cosmos and the future.

Important cult was directed towards the god sun and pachama who was the mother of the earth. They loved and respect their mountains, the nature and their environment at all. The education and freedom for their Childs was simple and wise. But all the beauty of his freedom, doctrine and spirituality was broken by the conquerors gold obduracy when in the year 1532  the Incas empire was destroyed by the Spaniards, who also forbade the practice of the Incas religion. Although after all those years and the new civilization, the Quecha language still is spoken by some Incas descendants.

At least as my small contribution to keep alive their words I decide to name my boat : as fast as the wind (Wayra).

I want to say thanks to all my family and friends who have given me moral support.
I  will feel happy to share my experiences  with any person interested in metal boats building.
I hope some day soon meet you on board.
