                       Log  Book

In the future I will describe here the most important happenings regarding to my trips when my Sailboat is  being carried down by the wind over those beautiful seas. In the meantime I just start to describe the most important happenings during the construction time.

Jun 2002:

Mr.Alvaro Romero as DPO trainee  join to the ship where I am working as DPO . He had worked recently  as Engineer projects Manager in the   construction  the Buoys handling boat for the navigation aid over the Magdalena River in Barranquilla - Colombia. He likes the Naval engineering and boats constructions and love sail boats as well. After days and weeks of conversation about boat constructions was concluded that we will be able to manage the project and would be started as soon as possible. Never before I had meet one person as positive and enthusiastic as him who makes real my plan postponed year to year since 23 years ago

June 2002 to November 2002:

After all kind of analyzes and comparison of all the possible materials used in the sail boats construction, was decided that the boat will be constructed in Steel and will be over 43 feet long  according to our preferences. After days and days of search, was chosen the "Bruce Roberts New York 46 " as the boat fulfilling almost all of our requirements. (Since many years ago I had already  studied the plans from  the world wide well known yacht designer Bruce Robert) Then we started to quote in Colombia and Brazil  shipyards the boat construction prices. The result of quotations were one absurdity for our budget.

We quoted all material prices and equipments  that will be used in the boat construction.

Was made contact with workers team in Barranquila - Colombia where Alvaro Romero has his good shipyards relationships.

Was made to the Colombian Maritime authority (DIMAR) the respective requirement for the boat construction.

The months from January to April were dedicated to full study the plans and special metal boat building books.

April 2003:

The Colombian Maritime Authority issue the permission for the boat's construction. Started to prepare the base and start to make the wooden frames pattern from the plans.

May 2003:

Started to assemble the hull with all the  metal frames made previously using the wooden pattern frames.

August 2003:

The hull  was built up side down and now is ready to be turned over. Was hire one crane to do the job. After turned over the next step are the metal jobs on deck.

October 2003:

The rudder is installed on place by subcontracted specialized  personnel. After that the hull is completely sand blasted and painted with Hempel Epoxi primer  to protect the metal meanwhile  proceed the following construction steps. At later stage when all welding jobs will be finished, the final complete paint process will be done following the strict Hempel  technical recommendations.

November 2003:

The metallic hull is completely done. At this stage the project stops for a while until beginning 2004, meanwhile some money will be saved to continue with the next construction stages.

March -  April - May 2004:

Plumbing system (Shower sump system, fresh water an oil deck fills, scuppers, seacock, etc).Hatches and port holes.

During this period My mother was all te time together with me helping; She was in charge of provide all the time cool fresh drinking water for Us, due to the hot days predominant in Barraquilla.

To her it was hard due to she come from Pasto tha si one cool city in Colombia (average 15 degrees ) But she wanted to know my boat. She always gave me moral support, and positive energies.

August 2004:

The electric trays were made to install electric cable system in future time.

Angle bars that will support  the bulkheads were welded in place.

Right cut out for the  port holes were made.

Imported and installed the  VETUS Hydraulic steering piston.

Transporting Sailboat hull:  During many days we were searching for a new right and safe place to  move the boat for the next construction steps. Also the  safe and cheap transport means to be used for the operation.

(Plan A) Was decided to drop the boat in the Magdalena River and tow using one small tug boat to the new location: Club de Pesca de Barranquilla (Barranquilla Fishing Yacht Club), about 3 Nautical miles up river. The access  channel from the River to the Club was previously sounded to  make sure the boat will leave when ready with the final draft ( 6 feets ).

Every thing was prepared for the operation, including new cradle that will be used to take the boat out from the water to the  yacht club yard. But the owner of the Crane barge  that will be used to lift from shore and  drop the boat into the river was charging one absurd hire price for  about 30 minutes operation. Was decided tranport the boat throughout the Barranquilla streets loaded over one  special track (as shown in photos). Therefore the plan A was aborted and plan B prepared carefully for transport  Operation programed to be done on August 27/ 2004.

Legal report, permission and paper works were made with the port and transit authoritys.

Using hydraulick jacks the boat was lifted to the track and the same way unloaded saving money without using expensive charges with cranes.

The operation was successfully done on August 27 and 28. The two twin sailing boat hulls were moved to new location where they will stay until be launched  definitely to the water some months latter from  now.

On the Barranquilla Fishing Yacht Club ( Club de pesca de Barranquilla) will be made the final jobs such as: deck and interior wooden decoration, Electric and electronic equipments instalation, mast and rigin instalation, etc, etc.

From September 2004 to January 2005: Great  jobs in Barranquilla are temporary suspended to get save money, in the mean time my brother Jaime Castro Caicedo (Mechanical engineer) are engaged in the fabrication of many devices such as: Hand rails, port holes, windows, and windows frames, pedestal, Anchor support, etc. Such devices are being done in Pasto city, many kilometers away from Barranquilla. At his work shop Jaime is making devices as beautiful  and proffesional as any big mariner supplayer (eg. West Marine, Sail net, Vetus, etc). You can see some photos clicking here.

August 2005: After many months  with the jobs stop due to my work, at this time was installed the deck and lateral windows. Was intalled also the pedestal and hydraulic steering system with the rudder wheel.

Was installed also the transducer case for the Echosonunder.

January & February 2006:  Fiber Glass water tanks are tested and installed with the fresh water piping system.Forward pulpito done in Stainlees steel material.

Bed suports are welded (Angle bars). Repinted properly the interior hull for next step:  Proper fire retardant thermic insulating layer installed over the sides.

Jun & July 2006: During the German football Wrold cup time the carpenter interior wood jobs start to be done. Using Playwood, formica and Teak wood. The support structure was done using " Abarco"  wood.

The " Toe-Rail"  around the main deck was done welding 3/16" X 2 1/2 " Flat bar.

During August 2006 the Carpenter continue working step by step in the interior wooden jobs.

In the meantime Contacts are done with " Deutz" China to buy and Import the Diesel marine engine and Diesel Generator.

November 2006:

The Deutz  Diesel marine engine  imported from China arrives to Barranquilla, as well the Generator set and many spare parts.

"HORAMA & CIA LTDA. SIA " in charge for legal import tramits and Taxes  makes a good  job without any problem.

Start  jobs to install the Marine engine, stern tube an propeller shaft.

January, February 2007:

Modified the engine base to fit properly the Deutz Diesel Engine.

Installed the Marine transmission " ZF 220 A"  (gear box).

Installed the engine mounts.

Installed flex shaft coupling. It was needed to make special adapter to fit properly with the gear box. Also was made one adapter for the Lazer device that will be used to aligne the propeller shaft.

More..... about flexible shaft couplings clik here (PDF File)

Run and tested Deutz marine engine.

Finished details in the Fuel tanks.

Inboarded and installed The marine diesel engine and Generator-set.

Start to make the exhaust system for the Diesel Engine and Generator set.

From January to December 2008:

Main engine definitely installed and aligned with the propeller shaft and Flex Coupling. Cooling pump and system installed

Generator set installed on place, cooling water pump and exhaust also intalled.

Many small works details were done this year.

Not big improves this year due to my short budget but... easy I does it. By and by I will get my target.

July 2009

July 2009:

The wet Exhaust system for the main engine was finished, proper hoses resistent to high temperature installed. Wet exhaust system for the generator was installed as well. For this system one other wet mixer was custom made in Barranquilla.

I have discovered at the calle 30 one  place where is selled all kind of used stainlees steel materials, used but in very good conditiosn, you can chose avery thing you need. The choose one is charged by kilogram, therefore it is much cheaper than buy at the normal material stores. I choos all the material nedeed to make the water mixer for the generator exhaust system. as shown on the photo. The water mixer is not posible to buy allready done due to the uknow location and layout of the exhaust system on the engine room.

On July the main entrance door was made with stainless steel plates. The same  mechanic who made the water mixer for the main engine made the door; he was   niknamed CONEJO (rabit). Later time I discovered why for this nikname: He use to take the mony to start the job but some times do no finish and disapear with the money. Run away.

The carpenter niknamed PAJARITO start to make the interior wooden doors and one other small things. He is a good carpenter leaving far away from EL CLUB DE PESCA. He do not use buses to come from home, he uses his old small bicycle, ride it aroun 40 kilometers daily. Transporting also his tools and wood on the bicycle. Soon I will post his photo here.

One proper and safe  acces ladder was done this time.

The final epoxy layer treatment was done, preparing the hull te be painted. I have decide to change the colour to red, its looks like better. This is the final treatement before launch the boat to the water. I had not done it before to avoid burn the paint when cuting or welding performing other previous jobs, from now not more hot works will be done at the hull.

Cooling water system for the engine was finished. All hoses conected.
